It’s still a bit early, but everything points to the Tesla Model 3 becoming the most popular EV in Europe by a large margin in 2021.
That is quite striking, because beforehand you could have just thought that the more compact, cheaper and above all ‘German’ Volkswagens ID3 would go on with this title in its first full year. According to figures from Jato Dynamics, brought to the attention of Automotive News, the ID3 will have to make do with about 62,000 buyers in the first 11 months of 2021. This makes Tesla’s victory seem certain, because the Americans sold about 113,000 Model 3s in the same period. That’s right: over 50,000 copies more! In September, the car was already in the number 1 position of all car types, so regardless of drive type.
The distance between the numbers 2 and 3 in the EV ranking is much less than that between 1 and 2, because Renault fluctuates around 60,000 copies with the Zoe. In the month of November, the Zoe was at 2 with 8,658 copies, but he still had to tolerate the Tesla Model 3 (10,739). In this month it was the Dacia Spring that managed to make it to third place, while the ID.3 only made it to seventh place.
Tesla is also taking the brand title when it comes to EVs. It is true that the success of this brand strongly depends on the two smallest and youngest models, because the Model S and X did not go further than 133 and 230 copies respectively in 11 months. The Model Y, whose delivery only started in August, has already scored more than 18,000 buyers. Next year, that car could also finish high.
Registrations in December 2020
In the Netherlands, the Model 3 will do it in 2021 with about 1,600 buyers, with which he has to tolerate the Skoda Enyaq and Volkswagen ID4. The ID3 is doing even worse with just 1,200 buyers, but it should be noted that the majority of ID3s delivered in 2021 were probably registered in 2020. Then Volkswagen ‘sold’ in a few months time almost 11,000 units, with which the car ended up in second place ‘overall’ in one fell swoop. We see a similar picture in Europe, because in December 2020 the ID3 was the most popular EV and even the second (Golf) most popular passenger car.
The complete and definitive ranking for Europe in 2021, including a nice top 10, will undoubtedly follow after the turn of the year.
