A record number of catalytic converters were stolen in 2021. Automotive Management reports this based on figures from the National Vehicle Crime Information Center.
Although the LIV does not have exact figures available for the number of stolen catalytic converters in previous years, according to Automotive Management, the partnership between the police, RDW and the Vehicle Crime Insurance Agency speaks of a record number.
Catalysts have long been popular with the thieves’ guild because of the high value of the precious metals used in them. Due to the composition of catalytic converters from older models of the Toyota Prius, catalytic converters from Toyota’s hybrid are relatively expensive. Of the nearly 3,400 catalytic converters cut from under cars last year, according to the LIV, no fewer than 1,388 come from Toyota’s Prius. A total of 402 catalytic converters were stolen from the Volkswagen Lupo, Polo and Golf together. So park your Prius in a well-lit place.
