For years we have heard rumors about an iPad with an OLED display. Just a little patience, because you have to wait until 2024 before you can actually buy such an iPad with an OLED screen.
iPad with OLED screen: not until 2024
Samsung is busy developing the machines for making Apple’s OLED screens. According to the Korean news source The Elec Apple has to make a ‘large order’ to make it financially feasible for Samsung.
Apple and Samsung already worked together in 2021 to make a 10.86-inch OLED panel, but that came to an end in the third quarter. The project was too expensive for Samsung to supply the panels at the right price. These screens for a 10.86-inch iPad Pro with OLED were (according to earlier rumours) planned for 2022.
Also interesting: ‘The first iPad Pro with an OLED screen will not come until 2023 or 2024’
When Apple and Samsung start working together again (and if Apple actually orders a large number of screens), Samsung can order the machines in the third quarter of 2022. These will probably be delivered in 2023. The screens can then be made and sometime in 2024 the first iPad with an OLED screen will appear (we hope).
The Mac also gets an OLED screen
There are also rumors that Apple is also working with the Chinese screen manufacturer BOE to make larger OLED screens for the Macs and iPads. The Chinese manufacturer can make OLED screens of up to 15 inches. The rumors have been going around for some time that the Mac will also get an OLED screen in the future.
iPad with OLED screen: these are the advantages
There are already several Apple products that already have an OLED screen: the iPhone, the Apple Watch and the Touch Bar of the older MacBook Pro.
When the iPad also switches to OLED, you will certainly notice this as a user. An OLED screen has improved brightness, higher contrast, wider viewing angles and deeper blacks. The latter is possible because an OLED display can switch off individual pixels and therefore does not have to show a ‘black image’.
