Google Chrome is still the most popular browser on Android devices. This is mainly because it is the default option on most phones. New features are regularly tested for the browser and this is done via Chrome Canary. Now a feature has appeared that can save people from accidentally closing all tabs.
Not everything is lost anymore
Chrome on Android has had “Close All Tabs” as a menu option on the tabs page for a while now. It seems that a lot of people accidentally hit that and lost all their tabs right away. For this reason, Google has probably started testing the new “close all tabs” flag.
The feature is called ‘Close all tabs modal dialog’ and can be enabled via the chrome://flags page in Chrome Canary. From then on, a confirmation pop-up will appear after selecting ‘close all tabs’.
This dialog ensures that you can still press ‘Cancel’. That way you don’t lose all your tabs if you accidentally perform this action. If you do decide to click on ‘Close all tabs’, Chrome will close and your tabs will be cleared. Opening the browser again opens a single new tab. This is usually with the New Tab page or Google Search.
It’s interesting to see how Google experiments with a confirmation dialog. On most other Google applications, after the clear/close action, only a temporary pop-up with an “Undo” button will appear. For example, when sending an email in Gmail.
Holding all those tabs in memory while the timer runs out to undo the closing of the tabs might not be the best idea. Even though Chrome already puts most tabs to sleep in the background on Android.
How do you set up this function?
You can only test this option if you have Chrome Canary on your phone, which is the experimental version of Google Chrome. The feature is still in testing phase and has therefore not yet been rolled out to other versions of Chrome for Android. It’s also not clear whether Google will keep this feature and roll it out to everyone eventually. So don’t get too attached to it just yet.
Follow these 5 steps to test the feature yourself:
- Download Chrome Canary
- Open the browser
- Go to chrome://flags
- Search for ‘Close all tabs modal dialog’ and choose here via the drop-down menu ‘Enable’
- Restart your browser
