Ford Scorpio (1993) – Into the Wild

When a car has only just arrived in the Netherlands and pops up almost immediately on the AutoWeek forum, you know it is something special. This Ford Scorpio has delighted us with its presence in the Netherlands for several months now.

The term ‘rejoices’ is somewhat subjective, because we can imagine that there are people who really have nothing to do with such a Scorpio. Nevertheless, we think it is really worth a moment’s attention if another one is spotted, even if it is not originally Dutch. This copy was only brought to the Netherlands in December. The owner must therefore almost be an enthusiast. AutoWeek forum member JFR snapped these two photos.

In any case, whoever brought it to the Netherlands has a wonderful performance. This is because we are dealing with a Scorpio with the 2.9-liter V6 in the nose that has been overhauled by Cosworth. That makes this the crème de la crème of the first generation Scorpio. With that 194 hp strong 24-valve, the Scorpio was quite smooth, especially for its size and the period. In 8.8 seconds you could accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h and at 225 km/h he really liked it. The Scorpio certainly didn’t shout that you were dealing with such a quick boy. You could tell by the wheels, but otherwise Ford kept it very understated.

It must be said that the Scorpio in 1993, the year in which it rolled off the line, now made a somewhat outdated impression. A year later, Ford solved that with the arrival of the second generation Scorpio. That would turn out to be the last model with which Ford was still active here in the upper middle class. The second Scorpio was admittedly the car of Queen Beatrix’s choice, but it was also often the target of ridicule by people who did not appreciate the design at all. If you had to choose, would you rather put the first or second generation Scorpio at your doorstep?
