With the Galaxy S22 Ultra, Samsung wants to combine the power of the Note and the professional camera and performance of the S-series. In this preview you can read about the S Pen, the Nightography and video options and also the surprisingly long Android and security updates.
Samsung today introduces the S22 series, where I already got the devices in my hands during the preview in the Samsung headquarters. The review of the devices will follow shortly, where you can read everything about the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ here. In this article we take a look at the Galaxy S22 Ultra, which according to Samsung brings together the best of the Note and S series: with a built-in S Pen, the advanced Nightography and video capabilities and a battery that lasts longer than a day, the Galaxy S22 Ultra the most powerful Ultra device Samsung has made. A lot of info is already in the aforementioned article about the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+, because there are many of the same functions. You will also find many specifications at the bottom of this article, where I mainly discuss the differences between these two devices and the Galaxy S22 Ultra.
S Pen
This Ultra version should make the Samsung Note forget and so there is an S Pen, for the first time with the S series. That happens right away, because this S Pen is the fastest and most responsive ever. With a 70% lower input lag, you can write and draw on the screen of the S22 Ultra as if you were gliding a pen over paper, according to Samsung.
Design and screen
The integrated camera lenses and the streamlined metal frame, which creates a mirror effect, should give the Galaxy S22 Ultra a premium look & feel. And I must say, this smartphone looks good. Also features Armor Aluminum (Samsung’s strongest aluminum), and a glass front and back. The S22 Ultra comes in four colors: Burgundy, Phantom Black, Phantom White and Green.
The impressive 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen has a bright display with a resolution of 3088 X 1440 pixels and the peak brightness is 1,750 nits. In addition, the Vision Booster technology ensures that the intelligent screen adjusts the brightness during the day, for example in full sunlight.
Processor, memory and battery
The Galaxy S22 Ultra is part of the first Galaxy S series with the new 4nm processor, the Exynos 2200, which, together with 8 GB or 12 GB of RAM, should provide a fast and reliable smartphone. There are also more flavors in terms of storage memory: there is an 8GB RAM version with 128GB storage, a 12GB RAM version with 256GB storage or 512GB storage memory, while the most expensive version has 1TB storage memory and 12GB RAM and can only be used. can be obtained in the e-store.
The smartphone also has Wi-Fi 6E, which is up to two times faster than Wi-Fi 6. The powerful 5000 mAh battery lasts a long time, and if you need to recharge it, you can do that with the optional 45W fast charger (€ 49.99) with which you can shoot for more than 50 minutes of video material after just 10 minutes.
Cameras
Samsung mainly focuses on the cameras: thanks to the advanced Nightography functions, you have to make sharp and clear videos day and night, which unfortunately we have not been able to test yet. The S22 Ultra is built with a 2.4 um pixel sensor, Samsung’s largest pixel sensor ever. As a result, the camera lenses capture more light and data and optimize the lighting and details of your video clips. Thanks to the advanced Super Clear Glass lens, your night shots won’t be ruined by the light of a flash. Furthermore, with Auto Framing you always capture exactly what you want.
With zoom capabilities that bring you 100x closer to the action, the Galaxy S22 Ultra is not only Samsung’s most powerful camera, but also the smartest thanks to new AI-assisted features like portrait mode.
Like the Galaxy S22 and S22+, the Galaxy S22 Ultra offers exclusive access to the Expert RAW app. With a series of built-in editing tools, it’s almost like having an SLR camera in your hands. For example, you can save photos in RAW format up to 16-bit and you have more control over your edits with more data from your images. Just like on a DSLR camera, you make your photos lighter or darker with ISO settings and shutter speed. You can also adjust the white balance to make your photo warmer or cooler. Or you can manually focus on the desired subject to make your photos exactly the way you envision it.
Security
The Galaxy S22 series is secured with Samsung Knox Vault. This security platform has a secure processor and memory that isolates sensitive data, such as your passwords, biometrics or Blockchain keys, from the main smartphone operating system. With One UI’s privacy dashboard, it’s easy to see which apps want access to your data and camera. You determine per app whether you grant or deny access. The Galaxy S22 series also introduces a number of new security features, such as ARM micro-architecture, which helps prevent cyber-attacks targeting your operating system and memory.
Striking: no charger, but Wi-Fi 6E and more updates
Samsung has chosen not to include a charger and charging cable, mainly for environmental reasons and because they have been supplying this since 2017, according to Samsung. Of course, cost-technical reasons also play a role here: they simply cost money and the packaging can also be smaller, which makes a significant difference in logistics costs.
Positive is the fact that the devices are equipped with Wi-Fi 6E, the latest Wi-Fi standard. Well, you’ll need to have a modem router to take full advantage of this, but you’ll probably have one in the future,
The Galaxy S22 series is equipped with Android 12, which is not striking. That Samsung with the S22 series, the Tab S8 and a number of devices about which more soon, no less than 4 years of Android updates. And 5 years of security updates. Which other Android smartphone manufacturer is following? I don’t see a number of Chinese manufacturers doing that anytime soon…
