The Hyundai Kona will be five years old this year and so the leaders of Hyundai have already discussed extensively about a completely new generation of the model. The new Hyundai Kona can be seen for the first time in these spy photos.

Hyundai is working on an extensive range of models that have been developed primarily as electric cars, which it will share under the Ioniq label. We have already known the Ioniq 5 for a while, a chunky EV with a retro design that will eventually be joined by the much lower Ioniq 6 and the SUV Ioniq 7. Hyundai does not only come with so-called dedicated EVs, including the Kona, are being helped to a new generation.

Hyundai Kona Hybrid (2017-2020)

The Kona presented in 2017 is available with (mild-hybrid) petrol engines and is also available not only as a Hybrid, but also as a fully electric Kona Electric. The Kona was thoroughly facelifted in 2020 and will be completely renewed in the foreseeable future. Although a lot will change in the design field with that generation change, Hyundai seems to keep the diversity of the engine range intact. Exhaust tailpipes are visible at the bottom of the rear of the new Hyundai Kona that you see in these spy photos.

The new Hyundai Kona in these photos is still quite fanatic in the camouflage patches, although there is already something to say about the new model. For example, the new Kona seems to be growing a size compared to the current 4.21 meter long model. Although Hyundai has a wide range of compact crossovers, there is plenty of room for this within the range. In terms of size, the current model is quite close to the 4.18 meter long Bayon, while its bigger brother Tucson stretches over a distance of 4.5 meters. In that regard, it can do no harm for the Kona to distance itself from the Bayon in terms of format.

Hyundai Kona (new generation)

The new Kona will also have a front that typifies Hyundai’s crossovers and SUVs currently and that the Kona actually introduced to the brand in 2017. This means a layered design in which the lighting is spread over two floors. On these espionage plates you can see that the headlights are quite low in the nose, the LED daytime running lights get a place at the seam of the hood.

It is quite possible that the new generation Hyundai Kona will also receive a plug-in hybrid powertrain in addition to a hybrid Hybrid and fully electric Electric flavor, although nothing is officially known about it yet. We do not expect Hyundai to present the new Kona before the end of the year and may not draw the curtain on its new potential success until 2023.
