VDL Nedcar car factory has to shut down the factory completely from Monday. The war in Ukraine has made it impossible to supply wiring harnesses. It is not yet clear when production can resume .
Shutting down the factory in Born effectively means an extension of the production stop at the end of February. Back then, the chip shortage was the culprit, but now Ukraine’s war is the cause. BMW, the client of VDL Nedcar, obtains the wiring harnesses for the cars from Western Ukraine. However, these are currently not or hardly available. BMW already had to stop production in Munich and Dingolfing, the Mini factory in Oxford will also be shut down for the next week. At VDL Nedcar, the production stop may take a little longer. A spokesperson said he was unable to estimate how long the factory will remain out of operation.
VDL is currently in talks with various parties involved about shutting down the factory. In addition to our own staff, the necessary temporary workers also work in the Limburg car factory. BMW is meanwhile diligently looking for another supplier for the necessary items. It is not the first time that VDL Nedcar has been forced to shut down the production line. Last September, production had to be temporarily suspended due to the chip shortage and a month earlier, the factory extended the three-week summer closure by one week.
