All AirPods in a row: what can you use them for?

Apple has already released a whole series of AirPods and when you want to buy a set you are faced with a difficult choice. What are the differences between all Apple earbuds and what can they actually do?

That is why we list all AirPods for you again and immediately tell you where they are cheapest. That’s a nice bonus, isn’t it?

All AirPods in a row: which one is best to use for what?

AirPods 1: officially no longer for sale

To start with the bad news right away: the AirPods 1 are officially no longer sold. You can still find them refurbished here and there, but that doesn’t really matter. Because the AirPods 2 can actually do everything from the AirPods 1, and more.

AirPods 2: The Best Budget Choice

The AirPods 2 are very similar to the first generation, but come with some nice changes. This is mainly due to the H1 chip.

Thanks to this special audio chip, you can connect to devices twice as fast, which also makes it easier to switch quickly between your iPhone and MacBook, for example. In addition, the audio quality is better than the first generation AirPods and the battery lasts twice as long during calls.

Furthermore, the AirPods 2 support hands-free with Siri by shouting ‘Hey Siri’ and wireless charging also participates (but only if you have bought the special charging case with it). The battery life is also excellent: you have up to 5 hours of listening time on a single charge (24 hours total with charging case).

AirPods 3: the (almost) all-rounder, without noise reduction

The appearance of the AirPods 3 has been adjusted. They look like the AirPods Pro, but lack the silicone tips.

Although they have the appearance of the Pro AirPods, the regular AirPods lack support for active noise cancellation. That feature remains exclusive to the more expensive Pro models and the AirPods Max.

Apple, on the other hand, has equipped the AirPods 3 with Spatial Audio. This feature is intended to enable surround sound (just like the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max).

The battery life has also improved. According to Apple, the AirPods 3 last up to 6 hours on a full battery charge. Are the earplugs empty and do you only have a short time to charge them? If you put them in the box for five minutes, you can listen to music for another hour.

The charging box itself can charge wirelessly as standard (also via MagSafe), while you had to pay extra money for this with the previous AirPods. The box offers up to 30 hours of listening time and also charges via a Lightning cable, if you prefer.

Do you want to know more about the differences between the AirPods 3 and the AirPods 2? In this AirPods 3 vs AirPods 2 comparison, we discuss all the differences between the old and new guard. And you can also read which AirPods you can use for what.

AirPods Pro: noise canceling earbuds

The first thing you notice about the AirPods Pro are the silicone caps. These silicone ear tips fit better in your ears, making the earplugs less likely to fall out. This is especially useful during exercise. When purchasing, you will receive three sets of soft, flexible ear tips in different sizes (small, medium and large).

The biggest advantage of AirPods Pro is the active noise cancellation, or noise canceling. As soon as you turn on this mode, ambient noise is filtered out, so that you can completely immerse yourself in the music.

The Pro earplugs also have an H1 chip. So just like the AirPods 2 and 3, you can also use Siri with the AirPods Pro and it’s super easy to switch between multiple devices with your earbuds.

You can listen to music for up to five hours on one battery charge. When the active noise reduction is switched on, you have a battery life of four and a half hours. With the charging case, you get about 24 hours of listening time.

AirPods Max: for those who don’t want to use earbuds

Would you rather not have earplugs, but want all the benefits of the AirPods? Then check out the AirPods Max. These are wireless headphones that you place over your ears.

On the side of the AirPods Max is a Digital Crown, which we know from the Apple Watch. You use this button to operate the over-ear headphones. You can adjust the volume by turning the Digital Crown and open Siri by holding down the button.

The AirPods Max also has active noise cancellation. As soon as you enable this option, the ear cushions ensure that ambient noise is filtered out. The AirPods Max also has spatial audio, a feature we know from the AirPods Pro and AirPods 3 earbuds.

AirPods Max

Apple claims that the AirPods Max has a battery life of 20 hours, even when you have active noise cancellation on. This means you should be able to use the headphones for more than two working days on one full battery. Not using the headphones? Then you put it in the standard Smart Case supplied. As soon as the AirPods Max is in it, it switches to an energy-saving mode.
