Android 13 is smart with apps that work in the background

With Android 13, Google will focus on extending the battery life of phones. In addition, notifications should warn the user when apps in the background are using energy. Only these notifications are no longer disturbing to the extent that you want to turn them off immediately.

Android 13 notification usage

Anyone reading about notifications on our phones that warn about the use of apps will probably get a déjà vu. Google has previously launched such notifications with Android 8.0 Oreo. When apps are running in the background, you’re guaranteed to see them, sometimes ad nauseam. Google is now coming up with a new approach to battery drain notifications.

The system is part of the second developer preview of Android 13, which has 9To5Google discovers. In the new version of Android, Google warns about apps that have worked for at least 20 hours in the last 24 hours. When a warning is shown about an app that is consuming in the background, and you decide to wipe the notification, you will not see it again in the first 24 hours.

App exceptions

It is also important that Google has determined that there are indeed types of apps that should work in the background. An example is an app like AccuBattery that we use in our editorial team for reviews to measure the battery consumption of telephones. Other examples include system apps, vpn apps, and apps that connect your phone to another device.

With Android 12, the operating system was often very strict on apps that should just work in the background and you had to dive into the settings every time to prevent such processes from closing. Although we don’t have to talk to ourselves that a change in Android 13 will put an end to apps that are closed unnecessarily. Many Android manufacturers use their own battery saving system in addition to the features of Android, which also plays a role.

Install Android 13

If you want to test Android 13, you currently need a Pixel device with which you can flash the ROM of the second developer preview on your phone. In this article we explain step-by-step how to do this. But if you can wait another month, Google is expected to launch the first beta version of Android 13 specifically aimed at consumers. You will be able to download Android 13 on more devices without having to flash a ROM.

What do you think of Google’s approach to the consumption of apps? Is it more effective compared to previous Android versions? Let us know in the comments at the bottom of this article.
