How to change your nickname on Discord

Discord is a popular chat program for computers and smartphones, which gamers often make grateful use of. They enter their own chosen nickname and then chat with friends and people from certain communities. In this article we explain how to change your Discord name; it can differ per server.

That’s right, Discord allows you to set a different nickname for each server. So you can use your own name with your friends, but be known differently in the community for a specific game or YouTuber. Very handy if you don’t want to be found right away or if you just like to be known everywhere else. But how exactly do you proceed?

Change Discord Nickname on Desktop

If you want to change your nickname via the desktop application, then proceed as follows. Open the app and go to the server where you want to change your name (servers are shown on the left). Within that server you look up your name in the list. Right click on your name and select the option Edit server profile† Under the heading Nickname now enter the new nickname you want to use.

After changing the name, a message appears at the bottom of the screen that states that there are unaltered things that have not been saved. Hit the green button so that you save the custom nickname for this particular Discord server.

Change Discord nickname on mobile

Of course, you can also use this popular application on a mobile device. Open the application on your smartphone or tablet and go again to the server in which you want to change your nickname. Open the list of server members; that button is at the top right and can be recognized by two figures standing behind each other. Now tap on your own nickname.

A new window will open at the bottom of the screen, where you will find a button for changing your server profile. Tap on that and fill under the heading Nickname enter a new nickname.

There is also a shortcut

Of course there is also a shortcut for this; a line of text that ensures that you perform this action super fast. This command works on both mobile and desktop.

Open the app and go to the server where you want to change your name. Then enter the following line of text: /nick † You then immediately change your name for that server. You don’t have to copy the characters < and >, but you can enter the name immediately after the command. Such as, for example /nick Avira.
