Eric Migicovsky, founder of Pebble Technology, starts a petition for more compact Android smartphones. He wants to use this petition to show that there is enough enthusiasm for these more compact smartphones and to convince manufacturers to make one again. What do you think?
the petition
In the petition, the founder of Pebble Technology, the company mainly known for the Pebbel watch, is pushing for smartphones smaller than 6 inches. His goal is to bring together other fans of compact smartphones through the petition and to put pressure on the (larger) smartphone manufacturers. He also wants to convince manufacturers to build the dream smartphone for ‘compact smartphone enthusiasts’. He sees the petition as one of the last chances ever to bring back the compact smartphones.
The ideal compact smartphone
Furthermore, Migicovsky mentions, in addition to the compact size, two more requirements for his dream smartphone: great cameras and standard Android. According to Migicovsky, if you apply these three aspects, you have built the ideal smartphone. He makes his wish list even more specific:
- No bigger than 6 inches
- Ideal is 5.4 inch panel with 1080p OLED screen (60 hertz is sufficient)
- Bezels are the same everywhere in terms of thickness
- 5G and NFC
- Two rear cameras (main camera and wide angle lens)
- Unlockable bootloader
- Snapdragon 8 Gen. 1 or other high-end chipset
- Cameras should perform well in low light
- 8 GB RAM
- 128 or 256 GB of storage capacity
- Price: 700-800 euros
Will there be a Pebble phone?
According to Migicovsky, there are currently no smartphones that meet his requirements. Although the upcoming Google Pixel 6a seems to broadly meet his wish list. If the petition also fails to convince the manufacturers, Migicovsky is thinking of putting such a smartphone on the market himself.
To help our Eric, and the other compact smartphone enthusiasts among us, on their way for now, we name two smartphones below. These two smartphones are, in our opinion, the best compact smartphones right now.
What do you think?
On Androidworld, you often read and see articles and discussions about compact smartphones. One likes it nice and compact, the other prefers ‘as large as possible’. Opinions are also divided on the editorial board. Claudia and Dimitry prefer a smartphone of around 6.7 inches, while Sebastien and the undersigned prefer a smartphone of around 6.1 inches.
What do you think? Let us know in the poll below and/or in the comments below this article. We are curious!
