iPhone 14: why you should go for the Pro version

The iPhone 11, 12 and 13 are almost as good as their Pro brothers, but much cheaper. They were therefore the most popular iPhones of recent years. With the iPhone 14, this will be a different story, because the differences between the regular version and the Pro model are greater than ever.

iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Pro

The iPhone 14 series will be released in September, but thanks to reliable rumors we already know the most important details. Four versions will appear again. There are two regular versions (the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max), but the real showpieces are called the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

In recent years we saw the Pro iPhones as a superfluous luxury. You paid about $250 more for features you probably don’t need. That extra camera lens (a telephoto lens) is nice, but you can easily do without it. And the iPhone 13 Pro’s ProMotion screen looks smooth, but if you’ve never owned a smartphone with a 120Hz screen, you’re not missing out.

There were too many similarities. The design of the iPhone 12 and 13 looks just as contemporary as the Pro variants. The ultra-wide-angle lens, wide-angle lens and selfie camera are (almost) as good as those of its more expensive brothers. And on the inside, the regular iPhone is equipped with the exact same processor as the Pro variants.

Big differences

How different it will be with the iPhone 14 series, which Apple will unveil this fall. When it comes to the design, the camera and even the processor, there are big differences in contrast to now:

1. Design

The iPhone 13 hardly differed from its predecessor – only the notch became slightly smaller. With the regular iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max, Apple doesn’t even seem to be working on the design at all.

With the iPhone 14 Pro (Max), Apple does make a striking adjustment. For the first time, the notch disappears, which we have known since the iPhone X from 2017. It makes way for two cutouts. In the round we find the selfie camera, in the pill-shaped the parts for Face ID.

2. Camera

According to rumors, the regular iPhone 14 (Max) will get an improved ultra-wide-angle lens. It is an autofocus lens with an aperture of Æ’/1.8, 6P. With the iPhone 14 Pro, the ultra-wide-angle lens also improves.

What the iPhone 14 Pro also gets is a spectacular wide-angle lens. It shoots pictures of 48 megapixels – a significant improvement over the 12 MP camera of today. The lens also makes it possible to record videos in 8K. With the regular iPhone 14, the wide-angle lens does not change. So you can still shoot photos of up to 12 megapixels with it.

3. Processor

A new iPhone comes with a new processor, but that rule does not apply to the iPhone 14 (Max). According to the very reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the regular models get the same A15 Bionic processor as the iPhone 13 (mini).

Apple would do this to provide additional distinction between the Pro iPhones and the standard models. So we can expect a new chip with the iPhone 14 Pro (Max): the A16 Bionic. The regular iPhone 14 does seem to get more RAM (6 GB instead of 4 GB), so the device may be slightly more powerful.

Choose iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 13

This year, Apple is making it much more tempting to opt for the most advanced device: the iPhone 14 Pro. It probably costs 1159 euros, just like the 13 Pro. For the larger iPhone 14 Pro Max you have to deposit at least 1259 euros.

If the rumors are correct and the prices remain the same, we do not recommend the regular iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max. They hardly differ from their predecessor. And they are a lot more expensive, because when the new iPhones are out, there will be significant price reductions for the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini. If you find the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) too pricey, consider choosing the iPhone 13 or iPhone 13 mini.
