CarPlay: you will get these new functions with iOS 16 this fall

Apple has announced a major update to CarPlay that will change the entire dashboard of your car. However, we will have to wait until 2023 for that. But the features from this article are already coming to your car this fall.

New CarPlay in iOS 16

It almost fell away due to the major update that Apple CarPlay will get next year, but there are already some new features that will celebrate their introduction in the fall with iOS 16. Those who already use CarPlay to bring many iPhone functions to the infotainment systems of their car can look forward to a number of improvements.

Fuel apps for CarPlay in iOS 16

In the future, Apple will allow two new categories of in-car apps. With fuel prices soaring, drivers will be delighted that fuel apps are now allowed for CarPlay. These show where you can currently refuel the cheapest. There are already many apps available on the iPhone and they are among the most popular in the App Store – but in CarPlay you search in vain for them.

Apps for so-called ‘driving tasks’ are now also allowed. According to Apple, these are, for example, apps that can call a towage service, offer help with toll roads or provide extra information about your route.

Siri sends messages faster with CarPlay in iOS 16

Sending messages with the voice assistant Siri will be faster in the future in CarPlay. You can have the message sent automatically after it has been repeated. Until now, Siri always asked for confirmation, which takes extra time. This improvement comes in the wake of the new ability to change or delete texts in the Messages app afterwards.

The Podcasts app in CarPlay will also be faster in iOS 16. Apple has also announced that downloaded episodes are easier to find.

Next Generation of CarPlay

The announcement of the next generation of CarPlay took a long time during the WWDC keynote. In the future, CarPlay can really take over all the screens of a car. Speedometer, controls for the car, radio and air conditioning and much more are displayed via Apple’s software.

It also becomes possible to adjust the display to your personal taste. Reportedly, the next generation of CarPlay is the result of Apple’s research into cars in recent years. There have been rumors for some time that Apple could even make its own car. The next generation of CarPlay is expected to be available in cars that will not be announced until the end of 2023.

These car manufacturers are participating

Apple showed a list of well-known manufacturers that are willing to cooperate. There we find Mercedes, Audi, Porsche, Landrover, Nissan, Ford, Jaguar, Volvo, Honda, Polestar and Renault. A notable absentee is Volkswagen, while sister brands Audi and Porsche will receive the new CarPlay. Perhaps Volkswagen will participate later.
