WWDC Aftertalk: macOS 13 Ventura

We already covered iOS 16, CarPlay, watchOS 9 and the new MacBook Air 2022 with M2 chip in the previous installments of our WWDC aftertalk. Today it is the turn of the new operating system macOS 13 Ventura, which was also announced during WWDC.

Our editor Bram tells in the above video everything about Stage Manager, the new Mail app and the cool innovations of FaceTime. Would you rather read along? Then quickly scroll down!

MacOS 13 Ventura bets on speed

Every fall, macOS gets an update and this time the new version of the operating system has been named ‘Ventura’. MacOS owes this name to a city in the US state of California called Ventura.

There are quite a few new features in macOS 13 Ventura. The video above shows the following innovations.

1. Stage Manager makes you more productive

With ‘Stage Manager’ you can better focus on the apps you are using with your Mac (or iPad). From the Control Panel (the icon with the two sliders in the menu bar) you choose the app. The selected app will come up and the other apps will stay on the side. With Stage Manager you can also use multiple apps at the same time. You then create a group of apps that you use together.

2. Mail App Searches Deeper

You’d better search the Mail app with macOS 13 Ventura. This way the app recognizes synonyms (or typos) and applies them to your search. There will also be automatic reminders and you can schedule the time and day of sending an email with the Mail app. The most useful feature, however, is one we’ve been missing for a long time. With macOS 13 Ventura you can ‘recover’ a sent email.

3. Improved gaming experience

At WWDC, Apple said they were also going to improve the gaming experience for macOS 13 Ventura. Apple now has Metal 3 built in. Metal is a technique that allows for more beautiful graphics on MacOS, iPadOS and iOS.

With Metal 3, loading and playing games should be a lot smoother and faster. This can be seen in the new MacBook Air with the M2 chip. Popular game titles such as Resident Evil VIII can then be played fluently on your MacBook.

4. FameTime gets big updates

Are you FaceTimen with your iPhone but are you sitting in front of your laptop? From now on that will no longer be a problem. With macOS 13 Ventura you can easily switch devices. This is even possible during the conversation! You can also use the camera of your iPhone as a webcam for your Mac via an attachment.

This allows you to use Center Point, Studio Light and ‘Desk View’. The former ensures that you are always in the center of the frame. Studio Light exposes your face well. Desk View is perhaps the coolest new feature of macOS 13 Ventura. This films your desktop from above with the ultra-wide angle lens in your iPhone.
