iOS 16 beta 5: this is what’s new

The final release of iOS 16 is getting closer, but in the meantime, Apple regularly releases a new beta version with new features. We have now arrived at beta 5 of iOS 16 and these are the main features!

1. Battery percentage returns in the status bar

Perhaps the biggest change in iOS 16 beta 5 is the return of an old acquaintance. It is now possible to place the battery percentage in the status bar again (on iPhones with Face ID).

The iPhone SE 2022 was one of the few iPhones that allowed you to always see the percentage in iOS 15. On an iPhone with Face ID and iOS 15, you won’t see the battery percentage until you open the control panel.

Now that will change in iOS 16. When you turn on the function, you will always see the percentage in the battery icon of your iPhone. So you always know exactly how much charge your battery still has.

2. New Sounds for “Find My”

Apple tweaked some sounds in beta 5 of iOS 16. When you tap Play Sound in the Find My app, you’ll now hear a slightly different sound. You can also hear the new sound when you ‘ping’ your iPhone from the Apple Watch.

3. Mini music player has a small visualization

When playing music and viewing the music player on your unlock screen, you will now see a small visualization at the top right. It actually responds to the music you’re playing at that moment.

4. Perspective effect is gone in iOS 16 beta 5

When you set a background you always had the option to turn on a ‘Perspective effect’. This option is now gone in beta 5 of iOS 16. Perhaps the feature will return, as it’s been available on Apple’s smartphones for quite some time now.

5. Dolby Atmos and Lossless in Music app

In the Music app, the Dolby Atmos and Lossless icons have been moved. In iOS 15, they were still under the ‘Play’ button. Now they are right next to the music genre.

6. Take screenshots

When you take a screenshot in iOS 16 and then edit it (and tap Done), you’ll now be presented with an additional option. You can choose ‘Copy and delete’. For example, the screenshot you made will not enter your photo library and you can still paste the image in a WhatsApp message.

7. SOS emergency call

The Emergency SOS option was renamed in beta 5 of iOS 16. Now the option is called ‘SOS Emergency Call’.
