Bald sedan is a beautiful image of the time
Models with trunk in the B-segment have not been praised here for about 30 years. Think of cars like the Volkswagen Polo sedan and the Opel Corsa TR, which looked like hatchbacks to which a trunk was glued. In the classic offer on this site, we notice a neat Polo from 1984.
The fact that we are thinking about this two-door sedan certainly has to do with this week’s car news. In South Africa, for example, they can still benefit from a relatively small car with a huge luggage space. A new Polo sedan was presented there.
By default Polo was very bald
Certainly in our part of Europe, the small sedan has not been popular for several decades. Admittedly, it often looked strange, such an excellent ass on a car that is basically designed as a hatchback. One of the previous owners (was that the last one to own it for 23 years or the one who ever ordered it new?) opted for the very, very, very bald with the lightest engine. A 1.05 C! Then you really didn’t get anything for free, not even a clock in the instruments. Yet we see wheels that you could order as a factory option and there is a right wing mirror. The mud flaps completely depend on the aged character that already depended on this type of car in the eighties. The smell of drowsy boiled Brussels sprouts, of crocheted toilet paper holders on the ‘hat shelf’. Elderly people who in that decade still liked a real car with an ass, and not a hatchback. That was the reason manufacturers still came up with these types of models.
39 hp for 1.05
There is a big hole where the radio should be. If you can still find an original cover for it, this wonderfully simplistic interior is really finished! Under the dashboard the big nothing, just a pathetic poker between the front seats to operate the four-speed gearbox. We also see a manual choke to lend a hand to the smallest Volkswagen four-cylinder of those days with a cold start. The 1.043 cc engine generates 39 hp. Now the sedan also weighs only 750 kilos, so a sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just over 21 seconds is possible. The engine has 154,000 kilometers on it. Top speed? At 135 km/h you can go just faster than what is allowed on many highways after seven o’clock in the evening.
Classic
The Polo sedan was also called Classic and it came in 1983 as a replacement for the Volkswagen Derby. That was already a Polo sedan. Until just before the turn of the century you could still buy a new Polo with butt in the Netherlands. In 1999, it was removed from the price list, as if the importer then thought that he really couldn’t start the new century with the then Polo Classic.
This classic is for sale for €3,000. A great opportunity to experience how little we used to be satisfied with.
