Number of EVs in the Netherlands tripled in 2.5 years

The number of fully electric cars in the Netherlands has increased enormously in a short period of time. Figures from Bovag, RAI Association and RDC show that on 1 September, more than 300,000 electric passenger cars were registered in the Netherlands for the first time. To put that into perspective, there are almost three times as many as 2.5 years ago.
On January 1, 2020, almost 108,000 electric passenger cars were registered in the Netherlands. On September 1, this year there were 303,348. 61,635 units of these are Tesla, which means that about 20 percent of all electric cars registered in the Netherlands are Tesla. 12.5 percent of all EVs are Volkswagens, 9 percent are Hyundais and about 8 percent are Kia electric cars. With a share of 6 percent in the number of electric passenger cars registered in the Netherlands, Audi is good for fifth place.
The Tesla Model 3 is by far the most common electric car in the Netherlands. 14 percent of all electric cars registered in our country is a Model 3.6 percent a Kia Niro and 5.5 percent a Hyundai Kona. The Volkswagen ID3 and Renault Zoe are in fourth and fifth place with a share of successively 5.3 and 4.3 percent.
However, the majority of the Dutch vehicle fleet, which consists of 9.2 million cars, has a petrol engine. 79 percent of all passenger cars registered in the Netherlands, 7.2 million units, have a petrol engine under the hood.
It is probably not very surprising that the number of diesel cars in the Netherlands is declining. This year, the number of diesel-powered cars in the Netherlands fell below 1 million for the first time. On September 1, there were just under 950,000, making diesel cars good for 10 percent of the Dutch vehicle fleet. The number of cars with a hybrid powertrain is also increasing considerably in the Netherlands. It now concerns 600,000 copies, almost twice as many as on 1 January 2020.
