Google is not going to roll out facial recognition to its Pixel 6 phones, the German branch of the company has announced in an interview. The feature is available with the new Pixel 7 series.

There will be no late update that makes facial recognition possible on the Pixel 6 series. References to that feature were recently discovered in the Android 13 QPR 1 beta 1 update for Pixels, but Google Germany now gives more clarity in interview with the news site Caschys Blog. Facial recognition remains exclusive to the new Pixel 7 phones.
Android phones have been using facial recognition for years, but it is Apple that has made the feature popular with a large group of users with Face ID. Facial recognition also played a vital role in Google’s Pixel 4 series, which got special technology on board to make facial recognition safe and efficient. That turned out not to be a great success.

With the arrival of the Pixel 5, the company completely changed course and chose Google instead for the fingerprint scanner. That’s also what most Android manufacturers do with their flagships. To make facial recognition really work safely, a phone needs more than just a selfie camera. Think of an infrared scanner, a dot projector and a light sensor. That technology is also more expensive to use in a smartphone than a fingerprint scanner.
It is not known why the Pixel 6 series will not receive support for facial recognition, because several sources indicated that Google has worked on this function for the phones. Facial recognition was even featured in Pixel 6 series promotional material. The company may now want to keep the feature exclusive to the Pixel 7 to give an extra asset to its new phones.
