Can I plant a tree in the same spot where I recently cut down a tree with woodworm?

I cut down a tree in my garden (white and purple lilac) because it was completely hollowed out by woodworm. Can I plant a tree again in this place or should I wait 1 winter? Do I need to take any precautions for the new tree? How long should I wait before planting a new tree?

Answer

I have serious doubts whether your lilac was killed by woodworm. I suspect that your branches died earlier from another cause and then insects later attacked the dead wood. The question then is, of course, what caused your branches to die? That cannot be determined from here. If the cause is biological (eg a fungus) then you can probably plant something new without any problems, although I would not opt for a lilac.
