The next two
Nio pulls the curtain off the new ES8 and EC7 on its own Nio Day 2022 in China. These are two SUVs with the same technical basis, one of which has a sloping roofline. In roughly six months, the two will enter the market in their home country. The arrival to Europe is in line with expectations, but remains undiscussed for the time being.
The Chinese Nio is working hard. The brand did not exist seven years ago, but now it has six different models. One of them, large sedan ET7, is now also driving around on Dutch roads and will soon be joined by the more compact ET5 and SUV brother EL7. We do not find the smaller SUV called ES6 and its coupe brother EC6 in our country, nor the first ES8.
First, because Nio is now pulling the curtain on the successor to that ES8 at its own Nio Day 2022 – an annual party at which it previously unveiled new models. Its appearance is no surprise, because we recently brought it up. The full-size SUV, which is in size between a BMW X5 and X7, will have a six-seat configuration and may also come to the Netherlands – with the name EL8. Technically, the car is almost the same as the EL7, so: two electric motors (together 654 hp), around 4 seconds for the 0-100 sprint and a battery pack of 75 or 100 kWh.
Nio EC7: slickest SUV ever
Not only the new ES8, but also the new EC7 got a spot in the spotlights at Nio Day. That is an SUV with a sloping roofline whose naming (and the shape of the taillights) suggests that it is more similar to the existing EL7 than to the new ES8. Then we are talking about the dimensions, because technically both cars are almost identical. According to Nio, the smooth shape of the EC7 makes it the most aerodynamically efficient SUV ever, with a drag coefficient of 0.23. The car operates in a segment that is also popular in the Western world (think Audi Q8 e-tron Sportback), so we do not rule out a European welcome for this model as well.
After all, Nio’s European ambitions are strongly present, which the brand underlines by the European roll-out of its battery exchange stations that has already started. The Netherlands now has two, and the first Dutch showroom of the brand is also a fact. The Chinese are also using Nio Day 2022 for two other novelties: a newer version of the battery exchange station that can change more batteries per day and a new type of fast charger with a charging capacity of up to 500 kW.
For the two unveiled models, Nio also gives Chinese prices, with the new coupé SUV being cheaper than the six-seater. Both will be on Chinese roads in mid-2023, can be purchased with a 75 or 100 kWh battery pack or can be used with a Battery as a Service subscription. As soon as it is known whether the models will also come to Europe, you can read it here.
