End for Mitsubishi Space Star?

The end seems in sight for the cheapest new car in the Netherlands

The cheapest new car of the moment does not seem to have a very long life anymore. The Mitsubishi Mirage (known here as Space Star) is going out of production, Mitsubishi reports on its Japanese website.

Although prices have gone up again from 2023, the Mitsubishi Space Star is still the cheapest new car that you can currently order in the Netherlands. For at least €15,990 you can get your hands on the keys to a brand new Space Star. Now it is, but the question is for how long. The Space Star is already quite old at almost ten years old and it seems that the end is now near. Jalopnik spotted the following announcement on Mitsubishi Japan’s website about the car being sold there as Mirage: “Due to the end of production of the Mirage, we may not be able to meet customer request for body color, options, etc.”

Formally, nothing is yet known about the end of the model, but that does not seem to be very long in coming. Mitsubishi builds the Mirage/Space Star in Thailand, where the copies intended for Europe also come from. Here in the Netherlands it is still possible to configure a Space Star as desired. AutoWeek also understands from Mitsubishi Netherlands that the Space Star will certainly remain available here until late in 2023. Production for Europe will continue for a while, but where there is smoke, there is fire. “The Space Star is a popular model of Mitsubishi Motors in Europe, with sales of almost 29,000 units (in Europe, ed.) in 2022, the vehicle will remain in production.” When the Mitsubishi Space Star does disappear from the market, the Hyundai i10 will become the cheapest new car in the Netherlands – as it stands now. It is available from €16,595.

With its relatively favorable price tag, the Mitsubishi Space Star still attracts the necessary Dutch customers, despite its age. In 2022, 1,411 copies were sold. The peak year was 2018, when 3,335 units left the showroom.
