Potentially rich Tatas
Tata has not built a great reputation in Europe with its own cars. However, the Tata of 2023 is a completely different brand several decades ago. In any case, these two new almost production-ready newcomers from the Indian manufacturer seem promising.
In the Netherlands you know Tata Motors indirectly as the parent company of Jaguar Land Rover, but it also sells cars elsewhere under its own brand name. Previously even in Europe, but they were unable to build a great reputation. For example, Tata also sold its first SUV in the Netherlands in the 1990s: the Telco. You may also know Tata from the tiny Nano, a city car that was even the cheapest car in the world. In India, Tata has never stopped building SUVs and hatchbacks and sedans and today the brand cannot be underestimated. It even builds Land Rover-based cars. For example, the safety of the cars is now perfectly fine. With crossover Nexon – of which there is also an electric version – Tata simply owns the first car developed and built in India that managed to score 5 NCAP stars. With two almost production-ready study models, Tata shows what it can give Indian consumers a taste of in the coming years.
The two new study models that will debut during the Auto Expo in India are actually more production-looking versions of previously shown concept cars. We start with the Curvv Concept, a further development of the show car of the same name that was presented in 2022. Where the original Curvv had an electric powertrain, this second variant simply has a petrol engine. Why is there suddenly a petrol engine in it? No doubt to confirm attention on the platform. The Curvv is based on a new piece of technology that is suitable for both fully electric cars and models with combustion engines.
Tata’s second show debutant is the Sierra EV. That too is a modified version of a previously shown concept car. After all, Tata already showed a Sierra EV in 2020. The updated Tata EV Concept has a new front and regular opening doors. The previous version still had sliding doors at the back. A production version of the Sierra EV should hit the market in India around 2025. The interior of the show car is also striking. Tata has probably hidden plants and other types of flora in it. Among other things, a moss-like substance grows out of the dashboard.
Tata does not yet have any plans to bombard the European market with its newcomers. Is that a pity? Do you see yourself going through automotive life in the production version of one of these two Tata’s?
