How economical is… the Kia Sportage Hybrid in practice?

Last year, Kia launched a completely new Sportage. Not only the appearance is startling, the Koreans also immediately sold more than 3,300 copies in our country. The car is available as a hybrid and plug-in hybrid, in this article we take a closer look at the fuel consumption of the Kia Sportage Hybrid.

The Kia Sportage was introduced in 1994 and led a moribund existence in the Netherlands. The model experienced a miraculous revival after 2004, when the new generation entered the market. In 2005, 3,135 copies were sold, the number only increased in the following years. The successor model did even better, with 5,513 units in peak year 2011. A record that cannot be matched by the new one, although – given the flying start – it remains a model to keep an eye on.

Practical consumption Kia Sportage Hybrid

The Sportage Hybrid is not yet overrepresented in the AutoWeek Consumption Monitor, but the number of owners tracking consumption shows about the same jump as the sales figures. Owners of a Kia Sportage 1.6 T-GDi Hybrid note an average consumption of 1 in 15.8, in official values this is 6.4 liters per 100 kilometers.

Kia itself gives a consumption of 5.8 liters per 100 km for the Sportage Hybrid GT-Line, converted 1 to 17.2. The average deviation from the manufacturer’s specification is therefore limited to just over 10 percent. This means that promise and practice at Kia are quite in line, which is not often the case in this section. The most economical driver even improves on the manufacturer’s specification by recording 5.7 l/100 km.

Because the model is so young, owners have not yet been able to drive their car for tens of thousands of kilometers, perhaps the consumption mentioned here will improve under summer conditions. Or deteriorate, of course, when they start to use the 230 hp of their hybrid powertrain more often.

Do you drive a Kia Sportage Hybrid or Plug-in Hybrid yourself? Then keep track of your consumption in the AutoWeek Consumption Monitor!
