According to rumors on Chinese social media, Apple will release a new Apple Pencil this month. You need to know this.
A new Apple Pencil will be released this month
The rumor comes from Weibo user ‘Instant Digital’, who was previously correct about the launch of a yellow iPhone 14, the use of frosted glass for the back of the iPhone 15 and Spatial Video capabilities in the iPhone 15 Pro. According to him, after more than five years without an update, Apple finally plans to renew the second-generation Apple Pencil this month. This confirms the previous message that a version with Find My support will be released.
The second version was introduced in 2018 together with the updated iPad Pro, but has never been updated with new features since. Last year, Apple launched a cheaper version with a USB-C port, but that is not a real evolution of the Apple Pencil 2.
You can expect these new features
There’s limited information on what exactly the update entails, but there are rumors of magnetically interchangeable tips, color sampling capabilities, and a shorter design with a glossy finish. Rumor has it that new iPad Pro models with OLED screens will also be released this month, so that would be a logical time to launch a new Apple Pencil.
As mentioned, the next version should work with the Find My app. This way you can easily find your Apple Pencil, just like AirPods and AirTags. It is unclear whether this version also has Ultra Wideband technology for the feature ‘Search nearby’or that you simply see the last location on the map.
Notably, iPadOS 17.4 introduces a new version of the PencilKit API, which developers can use to make their apps compatible with the Apple Pencil. However, there are no details on what’s new in PencilKit 3. This suggests that PencilKit 3 may add new capabilities for new hardware that Apple wants to keep secret.
