A quarter of current EV drivers are going back to hybrid propulsion

The electric car is still hot among business drivers, according to this Lease Top 10. Of the number 1, the Volvo XC40, 65% opted for the electric variant. There are only two models in the Lease Top 10 where you cannot opt for a 0-emission variant: the Volvo V60 at number 5 with 803 units and the Volvo XC60 at number 9 with 675 registered units.

Is the EV here to stay?

VZR research shows that a quarter of current EV drivers choose a hybrid as their next car. Another quarter (24%) goes back to petrol and 8% even opts for diesel. This means that ‘only’ 43% will go for an EV again.

What is the cause of this?

1. Phasing out tax benefits

The tax benefits of the EV are increasingly being phased out until there are no more benefits in 2026. Zero emissions or not, for example, the same addition must be paid as for a hybrid variant.

2. Flexibility

An EV gives the business driver less flexibility in mobility. Crossing the entire country for business appointments or taking the car on a private holiday without having to charge also proves to be a stumbling block.

3. Range anxiety

While the range of EVs is getting better and the number of charging stations is increasing, it can still be a concern for those traveling long distances. A fuel car offers more peace of mind because it can travel long distances.

4. Charging times

Time is money, especially in the business world, so standing still is best avoided. While EV charging is getting faster and faster, refueling is still faster.

In short, cost considerations, flexibility, range and time are factors contributing to the return of current EV drivers to fuel cars.

The basis for this Lease Top 10 is the number of business registered cars over the past two quarters. You can find the complete overview and the different price categories on the VZR Lease Top 10 page.
