Scoop!
Abt has been around for over 125 years and campers based on Volkswagens Transporter have also been around for decades. Yet the German tuner is only now sticking its badge on a holiday vehicle for the first time. The result is the new Abbot XNH, where XNH stands for ‘Explore New Horizons’. Striking: the basis is not formed by a Volkswagen California.
For the first time, Abt ventures into a motorhome and the result is the Abt XNH: a motorhome with five seats, four sleeping places and an exterior that has been updated by the German tuner. The latter offers the tuner sufficient reason to put its name on it, because it actually has nothing to do with the rest of the vehicle. Motor-wise, Abt left the bus untouched (it has a 150 hp 2-liter TDI) and the camper conversion is also carried out by another party. What is striking: the Abt XNH is not based on a Volkswagen California, but on a regular (extended) Transporter 6.1.
It is then fitted with a motorhome conversion kit from Vaning GmbH, another German company that specializes in such packages. Even more striking: in the end, the whole thing is screwed together by Volkswagen Group Services GmbH, which is another branch of Volkswagen than the department that builds the California. It comes ‘just’ from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. So we are dealing here with a Transporter 6.1, converted by Volkswagen with a kit from Vaning, decked out with labels and an exterior package from Abt.
Two kitchenettes
The latter consists of side skirts, other bumpers, 18-inch wheels unique to the XNH and a sticker package. What that looks like in real life can be seen for the first time at the travel and leisure fair ‘F.re.e’ in Munich, which takes place from 22 to 26 February. There the XNH makes its debut and you can turn its interior inside out. It is full of smarts and therefore houses four sleeping places, but also two kitchens: one extendable with a gas burner behind the tailgate and one with induction burners in the interior.
Volkswagen will start production of the Abt motorhome in May, prices are not yet known. A total of 500 will be built.
