Are you going on holiday soon? Do not switch on airplane mode during your flight, but use this function of your Apple Watch!
Take your Apple Watch with you when you travel
The summer period has been going on for a while, but unfortunately we have had to look abroad for nice weather in recent weeks. When you go abroad by plane, there are always certain preparations you have to make. Your passport and suitcase must of course be ready for departure. But that’s not all, because your iPhone, Apple Watch and maybe even MacBook also need to be ready for the journey.

It is useful to put the plane tickets in your Wallet in advance and to free up enough storage space for your favorite film or series. Once you arrive at the airport, all you have to do is set the device to airplane mode. At least, that’s what many people think. It is better to enable another function on your Apple Watch during your flight: the energy saving mode is much more efficient.
Energy saving mode on your Watch
With watchOS 9, Apple introduced power saving mode for the Apple Watch. In this mode, Wi-Fi and mobile data are automatically turned off. So this is basically the same as airplane mode, but with more advantages. The battery of the Apple Watch lasts much longer in this mode, because more functions are disabled in the background.
For example, in energy saving mode you will no longer receive reminders to do a workout and a telephone call may be delayed. The always on screen will also be disabled and notifications may arrive later. In addition, some health features are disabled. These are all functions that you do not use during a flight, so it is better to set the Apple Watch to energy saving mode. That’s how you do that:
- Open the control panel of your Apple Watch by swiping up from the bottom of the screen on the watch face;
- Tap the percentage of your battery;
- Turn on the switch behind ‘Energy saving mode’;
- Scroll down and choose ‘Enable’.
Once you turn on Power Saving Mode, you’ll see a yellow circle at the top of your Apple Watch screen. This way you can be sure that the Apple Watch will not connect to the mobile network during your flight. To turn the function off again, go to the control panel again. Tap the battery percentage and turn off ‘Power Saving Mode’.

Be careful, because Wi-Fi and mobile data on your iPhone are not turned off as soon as you turn on energy saving mode. Therefore, use flight mode on your iPhone during your flight and switch on saving mode on your Apple Watch. The mode was released last year for the Apple Watch and works with the Series 4 or newer.
