Apple is working on a new generation of the AirTag, which will reportedly be released this year. You’ll want to upgrade to the AirTag 2 for these features!
Air Tag 2
According to rumors, Apple will release a new generation of the AirTag, which will be announced this year. The first version of the AirTag was released in 2021 and Apple has not released a new tracker since. This will change in 2025, because the AirTag 2 is planned. It is expected that the AirTag 2 will have a number of important new functions, which will mainly be implemented under the hood.
Few adjustments to the design of the AirTag 2 are expected. The casing reportedly resembles the current generation of the tracker. This means that the AirTag is again equipped with a button cell battery and is therefore not rechargeable. The new AirTag may be more energy efficient, meaning the battery will last longer. This has to do with the new processor, which improves a number of functions in the AirTag 2.

You’ll want to upgrade for these features
Rumors predict that the AirTag 2 will get a new chip. The current AirTag still has a U1 chip, which ensures that the tracker can be accurately located. With the next generation of the AirTag this may be the U2 chip, which will make ‘Precise Search’ much better. You can now find the AirTag at a distance of between ten and thirty meters, with the AirTag 2 this is between thirty and ninety meters.
That is a big improvement, making the AirTag 2 much easier to find. This is probably especially noticeable in densely populated areas. It sometimes happens that the location of the AirTag does not load in the Find My app, but that problem is solved with the AirTag 2. Then you can almost always see the location and ‘Precise Search’ works from a greater distance. The most important function of the AirTag is therefore getting a major update.

Improved privacy with the AirTag 2
Apple is also improving privacy with the AirTag 2. It has now happened several times that the AirTag has been misused for stalking people, which Apple wants to prevent with the new version of the tracker. New measures should make it easier to detect unknown AirTags if they move with your location for a longer period of time. This improved privacy is rumored to be an important part of the new features of the AirTag 2.
It is not yet clear when Apple will release the AirTag 2. According to the usually reliable Apple expert Mark Gurman, the device will not be available until the second half of 2025. Then we will know for sure which functions will come to the AirTag 2 and what the starting price will be. Apple now sells the AirTag for 39 euros, and the next generation will probably have the same price. Are you looking for a new AirTag now? Then view the lowest prices here, so you never pay too much:
