Apple has already released the first airtag in the spring of 2021 – there are now indications that the airtag 2 is now really coming.
Airtag 2 is now really coming
Rumors have been appearing for a long time about the airtag 2. In the summer of 2023, Ming-Chi Kuo reported for the first time that the new generation of airtags had been delayed. A rumor of Kosutami then predicted a release of the new airtag in May or June 2025. That prediction did not come true.
In the meantime, more and more indications for the appearance of the airtag 2 and now even directly from Apple: both in the code of iOS 18.6 and in the iOS 26-Bèta have been found for the AirTag 2. Apple has also removed an accessory for the first airtag, because the company no longer produces it.
More indications
In the meantime, Spigen, a well-known manufacturer of accessories for Apple products, is also preparing for the release of the airtag 2. The descriptions of airtag products now contain an extra compatibility listing such as ‘compatible with airtag (2021)’. This includes the key ring ‘Valentinus Pro‘, a rubber airtag cover, a silicone bracelet cover and a protective film for airtags.
Viewed separately, the instructions for the coming new generation of airtags are not very strong. But the regularity with which they have been popping up lately indicates a great probability that the new airtag will be on the market in the autumn of 2025. Four and a half years have passed since the first presentation and the use has been spread wide. Recently even airlines started using airtags as an aid for searched luggage.
Apple will probably adjust the dimensions of the new generation, because otherwise the original Apple accessories and now the Spigen products would also fit on the new airtags. Chances are that the new airtag will already be presented at the next Apple event. Curious when that event takes place? The airtag 2 appears possible on this date!
