The Tonale is the first new Alfa Romeo in years, and it certainly won’t be the last. Alfa Romeo has a new model on the roll for 2024. That will be an important one, because it will be Alfa’s first fully electric car!
Now that Alfa Romeo operates under the Stellantis banner, the future of the brand suddenly looks very different. The Tonale had been in the pipeline for a while and therefore the SUV is on the platform that is related to that of the Jeep Compass, another real FCA product. Alfa Romeo has big plans for full electrification, while the number of electric models in the brand’s lineup is currently exactly zero. So work on the shop. Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato opens a book to Automotive News about the first electric Alfa Romeo.
Alfa Romeo initially only indicated that it only wanted to sell electric cars from 2027 in markets such as those of Europe and North America. Those plans are being tightened up, according to Imparato, Alfa will only sell EVs all over the world by 2025. The brand’s first electric car will be on the market in two years, in 2024. It is probably an ‘SUV under the Tonale’, a car that you should probably see as a crossover in the B-segment. Years ago, Alfa Romeo already mentioned the arrival of a more compact SUV, a car that would be called Brennero. Don’t be surprised if that name is kept alive.
Although ‘the Brennero’ will be the first electric Alfa Romeo ever, the crossover will initially also come on the market with combustion engines. So no dedicated EV platform for the small, long-legged. This raises the suspicion that the Brennero will share its base with cars such as the Peugeot 2008 and DS 3 Crossback. These compact crossovers are available with both combustion engines and electric powertrains.
