The renewed BMW X3 and X4 have barely rolled off the production line when Alpina is already coming up with its own interpretation of the SUVs. These are the XD3 and XD4, two diesel executioners to be reckoned with.
BMW supplies the X3 and X4, if desired, as M40d, a six-cylinder diesel with 340 hp and 700 Nm. Alpina offers solace in case that is not enough. The renewed XD3 and XD4 have the same kind of power plant under the hood, but with 394 hp and 800 Nm of torque. Compared to the pre-facelift, that is a power increase of 34 hp and 30 Nm of torque. With that, both SUVs hit 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds. The XD3 rumbles on to a top speed of 267 km/h, the XD4 narrowly wins the game with 268 km/h. You can make life miserable with an X3 or X4 M. Alpina sharpened launch control for even faster sprints. In addition, the steering system has also been calibrated differently, so that the steering must be more direct and precise.
Alpina XD4
Adaptive damping with specific Alpina software and a limited-slip differential on the rear axle are standard. A new system for the XD3 and XD4 called ‘Performance Control’ makes cornering easier thanks to braking interventions on each individual wheel. The exterior also changed, of course. In particular, the design of the front bumper has been radically changed from the previous XD3 and -4, with a different shape of the air intakes. The fog lamps of the previous model shine through absence. At the rear, the changes are a bit more subtle. The SUVs roll on Alpina’s signature multi-spoke wheels in 20- or 22-inch. Behind these wheels are disc brakes with improved brake pads.
At Alpina you can put together your XD3 or XD4 completely according to your wishes. Alpina does not show the interior, but do not expect any major changes compared to the BMWs, apart from the leathers, logos and the implementation of the digital counters. In Germany, the XD3 is available from € 85,900, the XD4 must fetch a minimum of € 89,100. Dutch prices are not yet known at the time of writing.
