Alternatives to Photo Gallery

Photo Gallery is part of the Windows Essentials 2012 package. Microsoft has decided to end support in early 2017. Although the program will continue to work on the computer, you should stop using it. Microsoft no longer provides the program with updates. This creates a higher risk for users, because security holes are no longer closed. As of January 10, 2017, Photo Gallery will no longer be available for download. We have listed several other free programs that you can use in Dutch.

Google Photos is Google’s photo program. Much of it works over the internet. The advantage of Google Photos is that it creates an online backup of your precious images. The downside of this is that you must be prepared to entrust the photos to the cloud (the Internet).

Google Photos can be used on various devices, such as an Android device, iPhone or iPad. To do this, install a mobile app in the application store on the device. It also works on the computer, although you need the so-called desktop uploader required. With this program you specify which photo folders you want to save in Google Photos. An advantage is that the files are immediately available on all registered devices.

You do not need a program to operate Google Photos. YOU used it in a browser. Divide all the shots there over different albums. Sometimes Google Photos comes up with smart album suggestions! Normally, all photos are only visible to you. Would you like to show them to others? Easily share the photos with friends and relatives via email or Facebook.

You can also edit the images in Google Photos. These are simple basic tools, such as adjusting brightness, color and contrast. It is also possible to crop and straighten a skewed horizon line. Finally, there are thirteen attractive filters, with which you give the photo a nice effect.

IrfanView is a comprehensive photo editor for free. Keep in mind that the program is not suitable for photo management. Read more about it in the articles on our website: Irfanview.

XnView is very similar to IrfanView, with the difference that this program is suitable for photo management. Indicate from a clear user interface in which folders the snapshots are stored. You will then have access to your entire photo collection. You can edit the images one-by-one, with a choice of all kinds of smart tools. XnView MP is not able to build a photo catalog itself. So always remember in which folders the files are stored.

FastStone Image Viewer and the previously discussed XnView MP are somewhat similar. Both programs allow you to manage and edit photos. One difference is that XnView has more editing tools in-house. This makes the user environment look a bit busier. If you want more peace and overview, FastStone Image Viewer is a great option.
