Amazon Prime Video now has advertising, but what about in the Netherlands?

Since January 29, Amazon Prime Video has added advertising to the basic subscription in a number of countries. But what about in the Netherlands?

Amazon Prime Video now has advertising

One of the cheaper streaming services has become more expensive, or you suddenly have to tolerate advertising. This is the case with Amazon Prime Video’s basic subscription in Germany, Canada, the UK and the US. The Netherlands will therefore be spared for the time being.

Amazon itself indicates that the amount of advertising is ‘limited’ and in any case considerably less than on regular TV. In a press release the company previously said that they took the measure because it allows them to continue investing in compelling content. No advertising is added to separately rented or purchased content.

Pay more for Prime Video without ads

Subscribers who do not want advertising in the mentioned countries must pay an additional $2.99 per month. Later this year, Amazon will roll out the same changes in France, Australia, Mexico, Italy and Spain. Ultimately, it will also be the Netherlands’ turn at some point, but nothing is known yet about when.

By the way, Amazon Prime Video without advertising has become more expensive in the Netherlands since last November. The basic subscription was then increased from 2.99 euros to 4.99 euros. This is Prime Video’s first price increase in the Netherlands since the service became active here three years ago.

All streaming services are more expensive

By 2023, almost all streaming services will have become more expensive. For example, Disney+ went from 8.99 to 9.99 euros a year ago and Apple TV+ even went from 6.99 to 9.99 euros. It is expected that Netflix will also introduce a basic subscription including advertising this year, comparable to what Amazon Prime Video has now done in a number of countries.
