Amsterdam is preparing for a speed reduction to 30 km/h

In a very large part of Amsterdam, the speed limit will be reduced to 30 km/h in December. As of today, the first of around 4,400 new traffic signs will be installed in the capital, but that is not the only one.

As of December 8, the maximum speed on about 80 percent of Amsterdam’s roads will increase to 30 km/h. Such a speed adjustment will of course lead to the necessary discussions and is not simply introduced. Work to introduce the speed reduction will start today in Amsterdam. According to the municipality, road markings will be adjusted from today and the first of approximately 4,400 new traffic signs will be installed.

The new 30 km/h signs will still have stickers on them until December 8 that read ‘December 8, 30 km/h here’. During the night of Thursday 7 to Friday 8 December, the stickers will be removed from all traffic signs. On roads where you are still allowed to drive 50 km/h, the markings will be adjusted, according to the municipality to indicate the difference between 30 km/h and 50 km/h roads. Depending on the location, this may cause some delays, although the municipality of Amsterdam says that installing the lines takes a maximum of 15 minutes per location.

In the coming period, new public transport lanes will also be constructed on various roads where, for example, city buses may continue to travel at a speed of 50 km/h. Regular traffic on the adjacent roads must adhere to the 30 km/h maximum speed in those places. Ridges will be installed at these locations that separate the road from the public transport lane.
