A function that Apple did not allow for no less than ten years now, is now surprisingly added to CarPlay. You need to know this.
Apple adds forbidden position to CarPlay
The function for CarPlay we are talking about is playing videos in the car. In April we wrote about the Sidecar app, which made it possible for the first time to watch online videos in your car, if the car was parked. Unfortunately, that option was only short -lived. Apple was not behind the feature because it would endanger the safety of road users.
It is all the more striking that Apple now adds a similar function to CarPlay with the arrival of iOS 26. It will then be possible to play videos from your iPhone via AirPlay on the central display of the car. So you can watch videos on the CarPlay screen when you are not driving.

Video in the car
The new function for CarPlay falls under the ‘Video in the car’ category (Video in the Car) on the Developer site from Applein addition to ‘apps for car manufacturers’ (automaker apps) and ‘car keys’ (Car Keys). The company invites car manufacturers and developers who are interested in supporting CarPlay, CarPlay Ultra, AirPlay video or car keys in their vehicle system to participate in the MFI program.
Apple says that car manufacturers have to add support for CarPlay with AirPlay video, so it will not be available for everyone immediately. Most car manufacturers are at risk when it comes to a function for CarPlay that may distract from driving. They also do not want to transfer too much control over their scenes to Apple. That is also the reason that Aston Martin is the only car manufacturer who has spoken for the new CarPlay Ultra.
Many vehicles, especially electric cars, already offer some form of video streaming or gaming options while they are parked. Some car manufacturers, especially those with the built-in operating system from Google, have already started adding native YouTube apps to their infotainment screens. Tesla even has a theater mode that supports Netflix, Hulu, YouTube and other services.
