Apple is working on serious CarPlay expansion

Apple is said to be working on an extension to CarPlay that would eliminate the need to continuously switch between CarPlay and the car’s system. However, this requires the cooperation of car manufacturers.

For those who don’t know: CarPlay is a way to mirror your iPhone on the screen of the car and so (among other things and mainly) to use your own music and navigation apps there. A major annoyance with this system and Google’s counterpart Android Auto, however, is that in practice you often have to switch between the phone projection and the built-in system of the car, because the latter is needed to operate all kinds of car-related functions.

Bloomberg reports that Apple would be working under the working name IronHeart on a way to control all kinds of car functions directly from Carplay. This would include operating the climate control, audio-related settings, adjusting seats and viewing all kinds of data.

Although that sounds user-friendly, the question is whether car manufacturers want to cooperate. After all, this means that a lot of data has to be shared with Apple and that the proprietary infotainment system, the development of which costs a lot of money and time, is largely bypassed. Whether Apple can convince them of this remains to be seen, because at the moment the company is keeping its mouth shut.
