Apple launches Tap to Pay on iPhone in the Netherlands – making payments even easier

Apple has launched Tap to Pay on iPhone in the Netherlands, making it much easier to pay with your phone. You can do this with the new service.

Tap to Pay launched in the Netherlands

As of today, a new service is available on your iPhone, because Apple has launched Tap to Pay in the Netherlands. This is an extension of Apple Pay, which you can use in the Netherlands since 2019 to make contactless payments with your iPhone. Tap to Pay works the other way around, because then your iPhone functions as the ATM. This means that there is no longer a need for a pin device in shops, for example.

With Tap to Pay you can simply key in the amount due on your iPhone for contactless payment. You can then pay with another iPhone or Apple Watch, but also with a suitable credit card, debit card or other digital wallet. The same technology is used for this as with Apple Pay, so Apple does not know what is being bought, how much money is being transferred and to whom it is being transferred.

Benefits of Tap to Pay

Tap to Pay makes it much easier to handle payments via your iPhone. The new service is mainly intended for small retailers and businesses, because they no longer need to invest in a separate card reader. It often costs a certain amount each month to use an ATM, but those costs no longer apply with Apple’s new payment service.

With this, Apple also seems to be meeting the European Union, because the EU previously criticized the accessibility of Apple Pay. With Tap to Pay, the payment service becomes a lot more accessible, especially for small entrepreneurs. For example, it will soon be possible to make smaller payments via Tap to Pay, for example if you have sold something via Marktplaats. You don’t have to send a payment request or work with cash.

This is how you use Apple’s new payment service

The new payment service is already available in the Netherlands from today, but not all platforms support Tap to Pay yet. Adyen and SumUp are the first payment platforms to offer Tap to Pay, according to Apple. The service will soon be extended to Rabobank, Pay, Stripe and other providers. Tap to Pay will also be available in the Dutch Apple Stores within a few weeks.

Apple’s new payment method can be used with an external app, not via the Wallet. For example, as a small entrepreneur you can already install SumUp to use your iPhone as an ATM. Tap to Pay is expected to become available to the general public soon, as more companies support the service. Transferring small amounts is even easier with your iPhone.

Completely new way of paying

Tap to Pay is now mainly interesting for small retailers, but in the future the service can become useful for everyone. For example, it is not yet known whether Tikkie supports the new service, but this would make transferring money much easier. You no longer have to send a link, but you can simply enter the amount on your iPhone. With another iPhone (or debit card) the payment request is then transferred in no time.

The new feature will be rolled out to several companies in the Netherlands in the coming weeks. In any case, it is already known that large companies such as Rituals and Rabobank will soon offer support for Tap to Pay. Small businesses can already use it via apps such as SumUp and Adyen, making a card reader unnecessary. Contactless payment is therefore even easier.
