Apple Cards vs Flitsmeister
The Apple Maps app was initially not particularly well received as navigation software, but has since been significantly improved. Flitsmeister has long been popular for locating speed cameras and has also been allowing you to navigate with it for quite some time. We compare the apps on a number of different aspects.
Design and navigation
Navigating with Flitsmeister looks a lot more minimalistic than with Apple Maps. Of course, one is not necessarily better than the other, it mainly depends on what you prefer. Maybe you would like more information on the screen, but maybe you think that only distracts from what it is really about.
Both apps map out virtually the same route and the same travel time for you, so you can easily get started with both. Flitsmeister is only suitable for use in a car. If you plan to walk, cycle or travel by public transport, it is better to choose Apple Maps.
If you decide to stop at a gas station along the way, it is not that easy to quickly filter at Flitsmeister. When it comes to these kinds of things, Apple Maps gives you a lot more options. The display of 3D buildings also helps to find landmarks there.
Speed camera warnings
This was of course Flitsmeister’s core business for a long time and that is clear. The flash notifications are almost always accurate and clear. Via the settings you can easily set for which situations you want to receive a warning and what sound accompanies it. This way you will immediately hear whether it concerns a speed camera, speed control or another notification. During section checks, Flitsmeister monitors your average speed, so you know exactly whether you are staying within the limit.
Apple Maps does warn for speed cameras, but is otherwise much more limited than Flitsmeister. Mobile speed cameras are sometimes indicated, but in practice certainly not always. This makes Apple Maps a lot less reliable. You cannot adjust any settings like you can with Flitsmeister.
You can report yourself about speed cameras or other things that you encounter during your ride with both apps. However, Flitsmeister is a lot faster in processing those notifications, so that they are visible to other users much faster. Apple Maps has already improved on this point, but is still not up to par with Flitsmeister.
Privacy
Flitsmeister relies heavily on user reports, such as reporting speed cameras. For this reason, the app also collects more usage data. Flitsmeister shares your location and can link certain contact details to your account. This location data is stored and processed, although according to Flitsmeister this is done anonymously. In the privacy policy states that the app does not share user data with third parties.
This works differently with Apple Maps. Apple only uses data that is not linked to you personally, so the company cannot see where exactly you have been. Conclusion: Apple Maps vs Flitsmeister
Do you want an app that warns you about all types of speed cameras? Then Flitsmeister is still the best choice. This also allows you to easily navigate from A to B by car. However, Apple Maps offers many more options in that regard and is also useful when you travel on foot, by bicycle or by public transport.
If you want an extensive navigation app, we recommend Apple Maps. You then only run the risk of not being warned in time for all speed cameras. So it is not such a bad idea to use both apps side by side.
