AirPods 4
The AirPods 4 have been presented! During the iPhone 16 event, Apple announced the new earphones, which will get a number of cool features. For example, the AirPods are equipped with noise suppression, a function that was previously exclusive to the AirPods Pro. Furthermore, the earphones have the familiar design of the AirPods 3. Are you curious about all the new functions of the earphones? Then read all the changes here!
Noise reduction
Apple has equipped the regular AirPods with noise cancellation for the first time. This feature was previously exclusive to the AirPods Pro, but is now also coming to the AirPods 4. The fourth generation of the AirPods has active noise cancellation and the transparency mode. This allows you to determine when you want to block out background noise and when you want to hear something from your surroundings.
With active noise cancellation, background noise is filtered by the AirPods 4. This means you no longer hear noise in a busy train, plane or other space and the audio comes through better in the earphones. Do you want to listen to the conversations around you? Or are you a participant in traffic? Then you switch on the transparency mode. You can switch between the listening modes via the stems of the AirPods.
Well-known design
Apple hasn’t made many changes to the design of the AirPods 4. The earbuds look almost identical to the AirPods 3. We see the short stems of the AirPods Pro, but the silicone tips are missing. These are the first AirPods that have noise cancellation, but don’t have silicone eartips.
The AirPods 4 thus offer a middle ground for users who want noise cancellation but find the attachments on the AirPods Pro uncomfortable. Additionally, the AirPods 4 are considerably less expensive than the Pro models, so you don’t have to pay top dollar for noise cancellation.
Improved charging case
The design of the charging case is also virtually unchanged, but that does not apply to the functions of the box. Apple has equipped the charging case with a USB-C connection, with the AirPods 2 and 3 this is still the Lightning port. The case also has support for MagSafe, which makes wireless charging possible. So you can also charge the box with your Apple Watch charger.
The AirPods 4 charging case also has better support for ‘Find My’. Apple has placed improved speakers in the earbuds’ charging case, as it did with the AirPods Pro 2. This allows the case to play a louder sound via the ‘Find My’ app. Apple is thus making it easier to find the earbuds if you lose them.
Even more Pro features
The earphones get a new way of operating, because you can simply nod yes or shake no with the AirPods 4 to answer Siri. This shows us that Apple’s voice assistant has become much smarter. With Siri Interactions for example, you can simply shake your head no when someone calls you but you don’t want to answer. Very handy if you’re in a room where you can’t talk out loud.
Adaptive audio is also coming to AirPods 4, which automatically controls noise management. In a busy room, more sound is blocked than in a quiet room. With conversation detection, your audio is automatically muted when someone is talking to you. We saw these features with AirPods Pro, but now they’re also coming to regular AirPods.
Cheaper option
Apple has released the AirPods in two versions for the first time this year. The AirPods 4 have advanced features such as noise cancellation and an improved charging case, but they do have a higher price. Apple has also released the cheaper AirPods, which you can get for much less money. These earbuds are mainly similar to the AirPods 3, for example, they do not have noise cancellation.
The charging case of the cheaper AirPods does not have a speaker and cannot charge wirelessly. These are features that you have to miss if you go for the cheaper AirPods. In the design of the different versions of the AirPods 4 we see no differences, both versions are identical.
