Apple introduces Tap to Pay on iPhone in the Netherlands. As a result, retailers can now accept Apple Pay and other contactless payments using their iPhone and a partner iOS app.

Apple has announced that businesses across the Netherlands can now accept contactless payments in person via Tap to Pay on iPhone. This enables millions of merchants, from small to large businesses, to use their iPhone to seamlessly and securely accept Apple Pay, contactless credit and debit cards, and other digital wallets. All they need to do this is their iPhone and a partner iOS app – no additional hardware or payment terminal is required.

Tap to Pay on iPhone
Tap to Pay on iPhone is available for payment platforms and app developers in the Netherlands to integrate into their iOS apps and offer as a payment acceptance option to their business customers. Adyen and SumUp are the first payment platforms to offer Tap to Pay on iPhone to their Dutch business customers, and Klearly, myPOS, Pay, Rabobank, Revolut, Stripe, Viva Wallet and Worldline will soon follow. Adyen has partnered with NewStore and New Black to support a wide range of businesses, including cosmetics brand Rituals. Tap to Pay on iPhone will also be rolled out to Apple Store locations in the Netherlands in the coming weeks.

Contactless payments
Tap to Pay on iPhone allows merchants to accept contactless payments through a supporting iOS app on an iPhone Xs or later running the latest iOS version. At checkout, the retailer simply asks the customer to bring their iPhone or Apple Watch with Apple Pay, contactless credit card, or other digital wallet near the retailer’s iPhone to pay, and the payment is completed securely using NFC -technology. No additional hardware is required to accept contactless payments via Tap to Pay on iPhone, so businesses in the Netherlands can accept payments from anywhere they do business. Apple Pay is already accepted at more than 99 percent of Dutch retailers and with this new option, almost every company, large or small, can use Tap to Pay on iPhone at the checkout.

Privacy
Privacy is fundamental to the design and development of all of Apple’s payment features. With Tap to Pay on iPhone, customers’ payment information is protected by the same technology that makes Apple Pay private and secure. All transactions with Tap to Pay on iPhone are encrypted and processed using the Secure Element. As with Apple Pay, Apple doesn’t know what is being bought or who is buying it.

Apple is working closely with leading payment platforms and app developers in the payment and commerce industry to offer Tap to Pay on iPhone in the Netherlands. Tap to Pay on iPhone complements and extends the comprehensive suite of payment and commerce tools that payment platforms and app developers offer their customers to help them run and grow their businesses.
