Apple Watch Series 10 detects sleep apnea: here’s how it works

The Apple Watch Series 10 has a new feature that can detect sleep apnea. Here’s how it works!

Apple Watch Series 10

On Monday, September 9, Apple announced a series of new products, including the iPhone 16 and the Apple Watch Series 10. The latter features a new feature that can detect sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is when breathing stops or interrupts regularly during sleep. According to Apple, 80 percent of cases of sleep apnea go undiagnosed, but the Apple Watch Series 10 should change that.

The new smartwatch will warn you if symptoms of sleep apnea are detected. For this, you have to wear the Apple Watch Series 10 at night, because the device registers breathing stops during your sleep. It is important that sleep apnea is detected, because if it is not treated, you run a higher risk of type 2 diabetes, heart problems and high blood pressure. Curious about how the function works? This is how the Apple Watch Series 10 recognizes sleep apnea.

How sleep apnea detection works

To detect sleep apnea, the Apple Watch Series 10 uses the accelerometer. This registers small movements on your wrist, so the smartwatch also recognizes your normal breathing. A new function has now been added to the accelerometer called ‘Breathing Disturbances’. This tracks interruptions in your normal breathing, which could indicate sleep apnea.

Interruptions in your breathing are normal, so Apple Watch needs at least 30 days to analyze enough data. If this data shows that your breathing is regularly disrupted, Apple Watch Series 10 will alert you that you may have sleep apnea. This alert shows you the time period during which you likely had sleep apnea and provides immediate information that may be important to a doctor. This makes it easier to go to your doctor with the collected data.

Feature also coming to older Apple Watches

The Apple Watch Series 10 uses a new sleep apnea algorithm to analyze data from disrupted breathing. You can also view this information yourself in the Health app. Apple is adding a new metric to the app so you can view ‘Disrupted breathing’ yourself. This also shows whether there are more interruptions than normal.

Apple has announced that sleep apnea detection will not only come to the Apple Watch Series 10, the Apple Watch Series 9 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2 will also get the function. In these models, the feature also works with the accelerometer. From watchOS 11 you can see the information in the Health and the new Vitals app. Do you want to order the new Apple Watch Series 10 now?
