In September, Apple launched three new Apple Watches: the Apple Watch Series 11, the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and the Apple Watch SE 3. The latter is a budget option, the other two are the current top devices. If you want such a top device, it is important to compare them and determine which one suits you best. The prices of the devices vary considerably:

Housing

The first thing you naturally look at is which of the two Apple Watches you like best. If you have a clear preference, that may be reason enough to go for the Apple Watch. After all, they are both top devices, so you can’t go wrong with them. If you want to go diving with it, choose the Ultra 3. This allows you to go underwater up to 100 meters, while the Series 11 only goes up to 50 meters.

Please note that the Apple Watch Ultra 3 is larger (49mm) and heavier than the Series 11: 49 x 44 x 12mm and 61.8g versus 46 x 39 x 9.7mm and 29.7g (42mm) or 36.9g (46mm). The Apple Watch Series 11 has an aluminum frame, but you can also opt for a titanium frame. That provides some extra weight: 34.6 g (42 mm) or 43.1 g (46 mm). It also results in a considerably higher price: 799 euros.

With the Series 11 you also have more choice when it comes to colors. There is Rose gold-colored aluminum, Silver-colored aluminum, Space gray aluminum, Jet black aluminum, Natural titanium, Gold-colored titanium and Slate titanium. With the Ultra 3 you can choose from Natural titanium and Black titanium.

Screen

The housing of the Ultra 3 is quite a bit larger than that of the Series 11. The screen is also larger, but the difference here is much smaller: 1.98 inches compared to 1.96 inches. This also means there is a difference in resolution. The Ultra 3 has a screen resolution of 514 x 422 pixels, the Series 11 has 496 x 416 pixels. For the rest, there is only a difference in the maximum brightness of the screens. The Ultra 3, with 3000 nits, is easier to read in direct sunlight than the Series 11 with 2000 nits.

Performance

At this point there are actually no differences between the two devices. They both run on an S10 chip and are therefore both lightning fast. They also both have 64 GB of storage space.

Sensors

For the most part, both models have the same sensors. The depth gauge on the Series 11 is limited to 6 meters. On the Ultra 3 the limitation is no less than 40 meters. The Series 11 is therefore only suitable for swimming and snorkeling, but with the Ultra 3 you can also wear it during diving and extreme water sports.

Something that is exclusive to the Ultra 3 SOS emergency notification via satellite. In practice, you will probably only miss this when you go to areas where there is no WiFi or mobile connection. The Ultra 3 also has dual-frequency GPS, which is more accurate than the GPS on the Series 11.

Battery

Besides the casing, this is one of the biggest differences between these two Apple Watches. The battery life of the Ultra 3 is no less than 42 hours. That is considerably more than the battery life of the Series 11, which is 24 hours. In power saving mode, the battery life is 72 hours and 38 hours respectively. In practice, a battery life of 24 hours is more than sufficient for most people. You only really need a longer battery life if you are in an area for a longer period of time where you cannot charge your Apple Watch.

Conclusion: Apple Watch Series 11 vs Ultra 3

Both Apple Watches are definitely great. The most important question is which watch you like better and how much money you want to spend. In any case, the aluminum version of the Apple Watch Series 11 is the cheapest. In terms of performance, the devices are evenly matched. The Ultra 3 only has a much longer battery life and a number of additional features, such as SOS emergency notification via satellite, dual-frequency GPS and much better waterproofing. The question is whether you think the additional price that comes with it is worth it.
