Apple Watch Ultra 3: Messages, find my and SOS emergency reports via satellite

The new Apple Watch Ultra 3 offers the option to keep in touch via a satellite when there is no mobile coverage. This is particularly useful for walks in remote areas or during camping trips in nature.

Satellite communication is not intended exclusively for emergencies. The connectivity via satellite comprises three functions: SOS emergency notifications, messages and search my, all possible via satellite.

Advanced radio and antenna system

To make satellite communication possible, the radio of the Apple Watch Ultra 3 has been improved for a larger frequency range. In addition, Apple has developed a new antenna that doubles the signal strength. Thanks to these innovations, the Apple Watch Ultra 3 can communicate with satellites that operate more than 1200 kilometers above the earth and move at speeds of 24,000 km/h.

For satellite communication in the iPhone and SOS emergency call functions, Apple mainly uses the GlobalStar satellite network, a constellation of Low-Earth Orbit (Leo) satellites that are specially optimized for mobile services and emergency reports. Globalstar has reserved the majority of their network capacity for Apple users. Apple has funded ground stations itself and continues to invest in the Globalstar network.
