2022 will be an interesting Mac year. According to reliable Apple insider Mark Gurman, we can expect no fewer than seven new Macs with Apple Silicon processor. Two of them will appear in March.
New Macs in March
The Apple insider releases his predictions in the latest issue of his weekly Power On newsletter. In it, he says that Apple has plans for seven new Macs with Apple Silicon processor:
- Mac mini with M1 Pro chip;
- 13-inch MacBook Pro with M2 chip;
- Mac mini with M2 chip;
- 24-inch iMac with M2 chip;
- MacBook Air with M2 chip;
- iMac Pro with M1 Pro or M1 Max chip;
- Mac Pro with two or four M1 Max chips.
Gurman expects the first new Macs to be announced on March 8, when Apple is likely to host its first event of the year. The presentation would revolve around the iPhone SE and iPad Air, but according to Gurman sources, Apple is announcing at least one new Mac.
Which Macs in March?
“Since the MacBook Pro and Mac mini are the Macs with the oldest Apple Silicon processor, I suspect these are the first models to be upgraded,” Gurman writes. Gurman is referring to the 13-inch MacBook Pro from 2020 and the Mac mini from 2020, both of which have an M1 processor. There is a good chance that they will receive a successor in March.
The iMac Pro also seems to be coming soon. “With the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips already on the market, I think a launch of the iMac Pro is close,” the Apple insider wrote. “I’m told Apple is gearing up for another round of Mac announcements in May or June.”
The super-powerful Mac Pro may also be making an appearance soon. Gurman expects Apple to announce the machine as early as the WWC event in June, after which the Mac Pro will be available in the fall. It is the fastest Mac ever and it comes in two main variants. One has 20 CPU cores, with 64 graphics cores. The most powerful version has 40 CPU cores and 128 graphics cores.
Gurman does not expect the new MacBook Air 2022 until the end of the year. “The MacBook Air is a good one” holiday seller“So it makes sense to release it around that time of year,” the analyst says. The Air probably has a new M2 chip. It is slightly faster than the M1, but also has a processor with eight cores. However, the graphic cores are improving: from seven or eight to nine or ten.
