Apple will stop supporting iCloud (and will delete your backup)

Apple plans to stop supporting iCloud for some users. Worse still, they’ll even delete your iCloud backup.

If you have an older iPhone, you should pay close attention. From December, you will need an iPhone with iOS 9 or later to back up with iCloud. Apple wrote this in an email to affected users.

New backups for iPhones and iPads that are still on iOS 8 will no longer be supported. Apple even goes a step further and plans to delete the existing backup in iCloud. Fortunately, apps and data on your iPhone or iPad with iOS 8 are still safe. And you can always back up manually to a Mac or PC.

Apple plans to implement these plans on December 18, 2024. So if you are still on iOS 8 you will need to upgrade to a newer version of the operating system before that date. Does your iPhone not support iOS 9 or newer? Then you can no longer use the iCloud function and you will have to buy a new iPhone or iPad.

This is why Apple is ending iCloud support

Apple switched to a new version of iCloud with CloudKit with iOS 9. That’s probably why Apple is ditching all old systems for backing up to iCloud and deleting the files.

This is Apple iCloud

iCloud is Apple’s online storage service. The service was introduced back in 2011. Hundreds of millions of people already use the service. With iCloud you can sync documents, contacts, emails, calendars, reminders, photos and other files. This way you can always access your files and they are safely stored online.

You get 5 GB of free storage from Apple as standard, but you have to pay for more online disk space. Over the years, iCloud has become one of Apple’s most important services because it is connected to almost everything on your iPhone, iPad and Mac.
