The streaming service
(Image: Netflix / Edit: WANT)
While Netflix seems to be losing its place at the top, the streaming service is still huge. Just like with popular titles, Netflix also manages to surprise with tasty features. Many of these features are just easily overlooked by users.
Netflix enthusiasts are currently speculating about a new feature that the streaming service is exploring. It is rumored that Netflix wants to do more with live streaming. Whether this actually happens remains to be seen. Fortunately, you are happy with the following top functions.
Five Netflix hacks you don’t want to miss
Whether you’re looking for a specific item or want better recommendations, these quick tips and tricks will make your Netflix experience a whole lot better. Don’t worry, you don’t have to be an expert for these tips. Even the worst digital literate has these adjustments fixed in just a few clicks!
1. Enable Smart Downloads
You have undoubtedly experienced it: you are in a place with no reach and you have nothing to do. However, this doesn’t have to be boring at all. Netflix is your lifesaver in these kinds of cases. If you have the feature smart downloads enabled at least.
Smart downloads downloads movies automatically when using the app. Netflix bases this on titles that you have recently watched or series that you have not yet finished. If you then end up somewhere where you don’t have internet, your storage will be full of your favorite series and movies. The only problem now is which one to choose. You can activate the option in the category Downloads in the mobile app settings.
2. Improve your recommendations thanks to your Netflix history
Netflix’s recommendation system is great if you don’t know what to watch for a while. The streaming service can only make its recommendations based on your viewing habits. This means that if you share a profile with someone else, your recommendations may not quite suit you. Does your Netflix partner regularly watch nonsense? Then you can easily remove this from your history. In this way, the streaming service no longer includes these titles in the next recommendation. To do this, go to the Netflix website. Here you find the settings and click on mmy display activity† Find the movie or series you want to delete and press hide from display activity†

3. Find your favorite movie in no time with the help of this app
Sometimes, instead of suggestions, you want to look at a specific title. For example, something you added to your watch list a long time ago, or an all-time favorite. You can of course look up the title manually, but it can be much easier. With the JustWatch app, you can browse not only the Netflix library, but also that of dozens of other streaming services. This way you can see exactly on which streaming services you can find the film or series in question.
4. Search for specific categories
Have you ever noticed that Netflix offers some specific categories in the main menu? Like ‘Horror movies with a strong female lead’, or ‘satanic stories’? Netflix’s library is full of these kinds of categories, but not all of them are visible. The streaming service chooses these based on what you prefer to watch. If you are curious about other categories, this handy search trick will come in handy. Each of these groups has its own unique code. As soon as you paste that code in the place of the X’s in the link https://netflix.com/browse/genre/xxxxxxx, you will arrive at a comprehensive overview of the category you are looking for. Now I hear you thinking: how do I know which code belongs to which category? You will find an overview of all codes here.
5. Take back control of the remote
Netflix has many different apps for smartphones and televisions. Each has slightly different controls, but the computer app has some nice keyboard shortcuts. This way you take full control of your streams yourself. Here’s a small overview of the most useful keyboard shortcuts:
- Arrow key right or left: a short press on these buttons skips forward or back for 10 seconds
- Press and hold right or left arrow key: you jump continuously 10 seconds forward or back, until you release the button.
- Spacebar or Enter: Switch between pause and play.
- Up Arrow and Down Arrow: Determine the correct volume.
- M button: The M key has the power to mute or unmute Netflix.
- S button: Skip intros.
