As popular as SUVs are, Volvo doesn’t let sedan and station wagon enthusiasts stand in their hempie

Like many other car brands, Volvo is heavily dependent on its SUV models. The C40 Recharge, XC40, XC60 and XC90 are responsible for 75 percent of Volvo’s worldwide sales. But fear not, sedan and station wagon enthusiasts! Volvo is just working on successors for its S60 / V60 and S90 / V90.

As popular as SUVs are, Volvo doesn’t let sedan and station wagon enthusiasts stand in their hempie

How little successful the S60, V60, S90 and V90 are, a simple comparison shows. In the first nine months of 2021, Volvo sold more than 162,000 XC60 units. That’s more than all of the brand’s sedans and station wagons combined. And yet Volvo chief executive HÃ¥kan Samuelsson has confirmed that the S and V models will be followed up. “We need lower cars with a less bulky body,” he told British Autocar. “So watch what we’re going to do.”

Nevertheless, Volvo continues to invest intensively in (electric) SUVs

But despite the fact that successors to the S60 / V60 and S90 / V90 are on the way, Volvo is going to bet even more intensively on SUVs. The market simply wants higher cars with the rugged appearance of an off-roader. The new Volvo XC90 will be launched later this year. The model will – of course – be fully electric. Half of all Volvos sold by 2025 must be electric, that is the goal of the Swedish manufacturer.

Upcoming Volvo models get real names

The upcoming XC90 successor will not be called XC90. Volvo models will get a real name from this year, no longer an alphanumeric code. Samuelsson calls the new XC90 a huge step forward for Volvo. “To just call it XC90 again would be wrong. For Volvo, the car is really the first of its kind. It gets a name, a bit like a child gets.”
