In 2017, the Audi A8 introduced the sharp, ‘pointed’ drawing style that Audi has since applied to all kinds of other models. With the facelift of the A8, those sharp edges will disappear again, but is that also an improvement?
The last time that an Audi front was overhauled in a really shocking way was probably when the A8 D3 was equipped with the ‘single frame grille’. We thought that was a lot at the time, although the large fencing is almost modest by today’s standards.
The facelift of the current A8, generation D5, is less revolutionary. At the same time, this renewal round actually brings more news. In addition to the grille, the headlights and bumper are also different than before. The ‘sliding sheet’ below shows, as always, where the news is, and that is almost everywhere. The grille is more rounded and less ‘pointed’. The widest point is narrower, but also placed higher in the nose. In addition, the underside of the grille is wider, which gives a distinctly different look. The headlamps got extensions at the bottom, while the openings below seem to be a lot more upright. Exchanging horizontal for vertical lines results in a front that as a whole should look a bit higher and more imposing.
Also new is the fact that you can now also order the grille – and all other chrome accents – in black. This is a variant of the also new S Line exterior package, which provides the A8 with sporty accents for the first time in its history.
“I’ve been able to get used to it for a while now, and I’ve come to the conclusion for myself that I think it’s an improvement,” the undersigned said to his own surprise in the most recent video about the Audi A8. Nice, but of course it’s about what you think. Vote!
