Best iOS Games August 2020

1. iPhone game of the month: Good Sudoku

How do you make Sudokus sexy? Leave that to Zach Gage. This game maker takes well-known games and gives them an interesting twist so that they work well on a smartphone screen. For example, Gage previously made Spelltower, Flipflop Solitaire, Really Bad Chess and Rocket-Run Pool. Now he has tackled Sudoku.

Sudokus were introduced in the Netherlands in 2005. In these puzzles you have to fill in a grid of nine by nine boxes with numbers. You do this until the numbers 1 through 9 are in each horizontal and vertical line, just like in the three-by-three squares. Many newspapers published a daily Sudoku, which made the puzzles extremely popular. However, they can also be quite inaccessible. Especially in the higher difficulty levels.

Gage decided to do something about it, and immediately created the most pleasant Sudoku interface for a smartphone ever with Good Sudoku. The puzzle takes up most of the screen, with numbers to enter and a note system at the bottom. Tap on a box in the puzzle and the game immediately shows which numbers can be placed there. One tap is then enough to place a number.

Take notes

The interface also makes it easy to take notes. With the gray note tool you indicate which numbers can be in a specific box. You can also enable this option automatically.

However, it will be quite a mess. That is why you can color numbers. With blue you indicate which cells must have a certain number, after which you indicate with red which cells that number absolutely cannot. If you then look in focus mode by tapping a number, you get a very clear overview and you can fill in some boxes.

The idea behind this is that you learn to solve more difficult puzzles. Also in the newspaper! The game also offers tips on various techniques, with names such as ‘Naked Triple’, ‘X-Wing’ and ‘Swordfish’. This is Sudoku for 2020 and the future.

2. PUSH!

Can you get the cat to the exit in each level? This game offers a series of increasingly difficult levels for you to sink your teeth into. The idea is that you have to move through a maze without hitting the walls. If you hit the walls for too long, you will lose a life. You have to reach the end of the series of levels without running out of lives.

puss! is an intense game that is more than worth your while if you like a challenge. Mainly the boss fights are intense!

3. Standstill

Although Stilstand seems like a Dutch title, this one comes graphic novel from Sweden. The game tells of a woman in the summer, who suffers from the heat, fear and loneliness. An exceptionally striking theme in today’s world. Among other things, you have to tap the color in the pictures to progress the story. An interesting hour to walk through, with good writing and a nice drawing style.

4. Game of Thrones: Tale of Crows (Apple Arcade)

In the summer months you can sometimes dream of the cold. Winter has already arrived in Game of Thrones: Tale of Crows. Set way before the adventures in the series and books, the game follows the Night’s Watch protecting the land from many dangers.

You play the game by making choices in dialogues and sending out expeditions. These expeditions take time, but you will be notified when there is news. Then the men need you again to make decisions. A fun way to dive into this world.

5. Brawlhalla

Fighting game Brawlhalla from Ubisoft is now available on your iPhone. In the game you can knock each other off the level with all kinds of different characters on the battlefield. The game has some problems with the servers on iOS and there are also complaints that it is not fair that you are pitted against console players, while you have to play with a smartphone screen. In any case, you can just try the game for free and judge for yourself.
